The students are Regan Bohanan, Cristyn Chauvenne, John Chua, LJ Johnson, Sedona Sayers, and Dylana Stoppel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: Tell us a little about yourselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We include both advanced undergraduate and graduate students at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Some of us are training to be teachers and some are already in the classroom. Others are just excited to gain a better sense of the reading world with plans to head into fields as various as accounting and editing, but we all have a love for literature and creative writing! Don\u2019t worry, though, we have other interests as well, such as football, surfing, plants, working on a cattle ranch, and just enjoying our friends and pets. Check out one of our cat friends in our photo!<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: Tell us about this creative writing class you\u2019re taking and how reading for <em>SmokeLong <\/em>fit into what you&#8217;ve been learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This class is an upper-level English course diving into flash in fiction and nonfiction genres. We focus on the craft of writing, incorporating research, and looking at how short form content can produce a long-term impact. We have observed a variety of perspectives and writing techniques to model in our own work. We\u2019ve also read lots of informational\/educational types of flash and lots of memoir\/anecdotal types of flash, and <em>SmokeLong <\/em>sandwiches those ideas and introduces a more introspective type of flash. It also fits well as we research flash-focused literary journals. Reading for this magazine asks us to apply our perspectives and the lessons we\u2019ve learned in a professional setting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: Now that you\u2019ve read through our submission queue, how has your perspective on flash fiction changed or expanded?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our perspective has expanded through seeing that the length of a piece doesn\u2019t necessarily determine how much \u201cstory\u201d it can contain. The submissions we read were incredibly varied, and yet the best of them demonstrated in-depth narrative arcs in only a few short lines. There is an impressive amount of intentionality that goes into this genre; flash forces writers to be decisive in how they write. Flash authors are able to convince readers that a narrative can occur in a snapshot but no two pieces will ever reveal the same image. The <em>SmokeLong <\/em>submission queue shows that there is a vast range of voices crafting such a compact genre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: What was your biggest takeaway or surprise from reading our queue?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of our big takeaways is just the wide spectrum of writing that flash allows for. There\u2019s room for all different genres (fantasy, science fiction, dark comedy, etc.) and a variety of different stylistic choices and voices. Some read like a moment, a memory, or even a feeling. What seems most impressive is what can be accomplished in such a small amount of text. When one is limited in length, there has to be precision and integrity. Exclude the wrong thing and the story could lose an important emotional beat; alternatively, misplaced inclusions could waste precious word space. Flash can be incredibly small in length without feeling small in scope.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: Who are some of your favorite writers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our favorite writers come from a mix of genres, but the expectations of the writers remain the same: we want someone who will build a strong connection with readers and will absorb us into their stories. That could mean the classics that you can never go wrong with, like Edgar Allan Poe and the Bront\u00eb sisters, or it could also mean the dystopias that become more real every day, like Suzanne Collins and Matt Dinniman. Finally, we reach for the ones that will have you wanting to laugh, cry, and contemplate life like Jim Butcher and Donna Tartt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: Name a <em>SmokeLong <\/em>piece you&#8217;ve enjoyed and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before reading the queue, we did our own explorations of pieces published by <em>SmokeLong. <\/em>Here are a few of the works we enjoyed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCadillacs on the Moon\u201d by Travis Flatt for its emotional honesty and playfulness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOctopus Heart\u201d by Latifa Ayad for creating a central metaphor that makes anxiety and depression tangible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGods of Hunger, Gods of Want\u201d by Candice May for its ability to take something personal and painful and make it recognizable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBone\u201d by Didi Wood for the dark imagery of self-doubt and loneliness that draw us in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSavior\u201d by Seth Gleckman for exploring perspectives of hard work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHouse of My Soon-to-Be Ex\u201d by Claudia Monpere for its experimental form that challenges setting through structure and contrast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SLQ: What are your favorite reading\/studying snacks?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our favorite snacks include\u2014but are not limited to\u2014Cheeto Puffs, chocolate oranges, popcorn, pretzel sticks with M&amp;Ms, oolong tea, and coffee. have a clearer idea of who we are, who reads your work first at SmokeLong, and what they love to see in the SmokeLong submissions queue. We are all writers at SmokeLong, so we know that sharing work can be difficult. Our submissions editors are all experienced flash writers and participate in the discussion throughout the editorial process. Your work is assigned to two submissions editors and sent to the senior editors if at least one of the submissions editors votes MAYBE on the submission. At SmokeLong we are always rooting for you.\u00a0 \u2013 Christopher Allen, Publisher<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today, I am thrilled to introduce Vaibhavi Kerkar. Vaibhavi\u2019s focus on the technical aspects of flash writing is a great lens to view your own work. I hope her words help you to hone your craft and your submissions. &#8211; Melissa Llanes Brownlee, Senior Submissions Editor<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What excites you about a submission?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good writing on the sentence level. I think that flash fiction is a storytelling medium that can showcase the beauty of language better than any other. Because of its essential brevity, you cannot afford to waste even a single word. And so good word choice, interesting observations and phrasings, strong imagery, and narrative lines that evoke a deep emotional reaction from the reader \u2013 cycling between these types of \u201cwell written lines\u201d, with no respite, with no average sentence \u2013 that is what excites me in a submission.<\/p>\n<p>Also, in a flash fiction piece, you can concentrate vocabulary to the point that the words, even isolated from their sentences, show you an image in themselves. Submissions that home in on atmosphere and word choice in such a way will always have a special place in my heart \u2013 purely because of how much I love the language aspect of stories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s something about a submission that makes you want to give it a thumbs-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think that a good submission needs to check a lot of boxes: good writing on the line level, tension, immediacy, conflict, flow, cohesive themes, emotional impact, and a conclusive and impactful ending. I review submissions a bit technically, so if you get all or even most of these, it\u2019s most likely going to be a yes from me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your advice for writers submitting to SmokeLong?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Work on pieces for as long as possible before sending them in. Polish them past the point of \u2018perfection\u2019. I too relate to the urge of wanting to submit a piece you\u2019re excited about, but so many stories that are rejected have a great concept, a great story, and some beautiful language, but are rejected simply because they aren\u2019t ready yet and need more work.<\/p>\n<p>That is, some more polishing. One way to interpret \u2018polishing\u2019 is editing and condensing. Additionally, needing polishing also means that the piece needs more intentionality \u2013 a cohesiveness in its word choice, theme, and plot. At SLQ, you are given only 1000 words to tell your story, so each aspect of the story and every word should be chosen only after careful, well-thought-out decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you reading now &#8211; besides SmokeLong submissions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like to have 2-3 books going at once so that I can cycle through them depending on what I need \u2013 leisure, project-specific writing inspiration, or just a challenging read to exercise my mind. Currently, I\u2019m reading <em>Frankenstein<\/em> by Mary Shelley, <em>Secret History<\/em> by Donna Tartt, and <em>House In The Country<\/em> by Jose Donoso.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there are two works being taught in my English Lit university classes: Naik\u2019s \u2018The Upheaval\u2019 and Shakespeare\u2019s \u2018Macbeth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you find your way to flash?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been an avid reader of literary magazines since my early teens because I was eager to learn \u2018how to write well\u2019. And because I wanted to supplement technical writing advice from articles and YouTube videos with actual practical reading, I figured there was no better place for this than literary magazines \u2013 publications that publish only the best of the best from thousands of submissions, and prioritize the literary craft. And so, I discovered flash fiction through literary magazines like SmokeLong, and remain an engaged reader of literary magazines even now.<\/p>\n<p>__________________________<\/p>\n<p>Vaibhavi Kerkar (she\/her) is a writer from the Goa, India. We are all writers at SmokeLong, so we know that sharing work can be difficult. Our submissions editors are all experienced flash writers and participate in the discussion throughout the editorial process. Your work is assigned to two submissions editors and sent to the senior editors if at least one of the submissions editors votes MAYBE on the submission. At SmokeLong we are always rooting for you.\u00a0 &#8211; Christopher Allen, Publisher<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I am so excited to start this new series sharing our wonderful submissions editors with you. We gave all of our submissions editors ten questions and let them choose four or five to answer. We begin this series with Ani King! For this first interview, Ani has answered all ten of the questions so that you can see all of the questions from the get go. I hope you find Ani\u2019s answers inspiring and informative. &#8211; Melissa Llanes Brownlee, Senior Submissions Editor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What excites you about a submission?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love it when a submission starts right from the go and never stops moving. Pacing will vary of course, but with stories that immerse me immediately I find I am happy to be pulled through at the story&#8217;s speed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s something about a submission that makes you want to give it a thumbs-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Surprising language at the line level paired with the feeling that every word, every bit of punctuation matters and was intentional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When do you read submissions? Do you have a special place?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I try to read in the mornings while it&#8217;s quiet and I am at my most open\u2014the day hasn&#8217;t had a chance to shift me in any specific direction and I feel like I can approach each story I&#8217;m reading from that space and give it the attention it deserves. I usually do this in my office\/studio, sometimes while accompanied by cats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you feel about content warnings?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I appreciate them, personally. It doesn&#8217;t mean I won&#8217;t read something very often, but it lets me brace a little when it comes to personally sensitive topics and deliberately approach them from a stable place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your advice for writers submitting to SmokeLong?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Compression, compression, compression! The note I leave most often is that a story would benefit from compression, because it would create more immediacy and tension. Every component of a flash piece needs to be necessary, and a lot of times my thought is that I don&#8217;t need exposition or explanation, I need to be in the moment presented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you love about flash? Reading or writing it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Flash is my favorite! As a reader, I love how massive the stories can be for a few hundred words. It&#8217;s always surprising me\u2014people do such amazing, experimental things with form, topic, style, perspective. As a writer, I love how much play there is, how you can break the rules without exhausting a reader&#8217;s tolerance for stand out elements, like repetition or the breathless sentence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you reading now &#8211; besides SmokeLong submissions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am at this exact moment reading\u00a0<em>Haikyuu!!<\/em>, a manga series by Haruichi Furudate I affectionately say is about shout-y high school volleyball idiots;\u00a0<em>Live Oak, With Moss<\/em>, which has art by Brian Selznick paired with a cycle of twelve poems by Walt Whitman about a love story between two men;\u00a0<em>Helen of Troy, 1993<\/em>\u00a0by Maria Zoccola, which is a poetry collection focused on Helen of Troy if she were a young mother in Tennessee; and I just started\u00a0<em>Fortune&#8217;s Wake<\/em>\u00a0by C.L. Clark because y&#8217;all, there are butch sword lesbians and I really need that in my life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you writing now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am alternating between working on a novel-in-flash project about a queer person in the 1990&#8217;s who partially transforms into a deer, and drafting guest blog posts as part of promoting\u00a0<em>Family Night<\/em>. This includes an article about a literary tattoo and its connection to Pippi Longstocking, Anne Shirley, Meg and Jo March, and Lolly Willowes, plus a b-sides playlist for the book itself, and more than a few recommended reading posts in which I get to sing the praises of my favorite flash collections!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What brings you joy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think I am at an age and place in my life where I am getting better at seeking out and making joy, instead of hoping it comes, so a lot of small things: the landscape while I&#8217;m driving, the rabbits who probably live under our back deck, my cats doing cat things (oh big stretch!), having a brief but nice conversation with a stranger. We asked them some questions to get to know them better and discover what they are hoping to learn from this experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SLQ: Tell us a little about yourselves.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Kris<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My name is Kristen Zory King and I am a writer based in Washington, DC. I am the author of <em>Ladies, Ladies, Ladies,<\/em> a chapbook of flash fiction published by Stanchion, alongside numerous poems, essays, and stories available through various anthologies and publications in print and online. In addition to my work on the page, I am also a teaching artist, yoga instructor, and graduate student at George Mason University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Kate<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am an English major at George Mason University with a concentration in Creative Writing, and I am minoring in Dynamic Publishing. I love reading and I love collaborating with authors who are passionate about the stories that they want to tell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Christina<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am an English major at George Mason on the pre-law track and have a concentration in Creative writing. My passion for literature led me to this class to learn more about the ins and outs of publishing and editing, as I\u2019ve spent the majority of my life on the writer\u2019s side of things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Charisma<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am majoring in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and minoring in Dynamic Publishing. From a very young age, I have loved both reading and writing, so I decided to make it a career. You can almost always find me with a book in my hand or see my bookish updates on my Instagram.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Austin<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m an MFA student in fiction. I\u2019ve moved around a lot in my life from Oklahoma to Tbilisi, Georgia to Morocco to Berlin, Los Angeles, and now Washington DC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Misheel<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am an undergraduate English major with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric and a minor in Dynamic Publishing. I am more interested in editing and publishing than I am writing. I\u2019ve lived all over the world from Beijing and Berlin to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. I hope to get into the publishing industry and possibly pursue a Library Science Masters in the future to work in archives or as a librarian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Megan<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m an English major concentrating in creative writing. I\u2019ve been writing since middle school, but it wasn\u2019t until joining the editorial staff of my high school\u2019s literary magazine when I became more interested in the publishing sphere. As for my time in college, I\u2019ve done a little bit work as a slush reader for Stillhouse Press, but I\u2019m excited to hone my creative instincts even further with this class.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SLQ: Tell us a little about this creative writing class you\u2019re taking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Publishing is a semester-long course at George Mason University taught by Michael Don,\u00a0in which we are learning more about the publishing sphere around the world through guest speakers from various international literary journals and presses, readings on issues in the world of publishing, and editorial work for <em>Kikwetu: A Journal of East African Literature.\u00a0<\/em>We get to have hands-on experience as readers and editors for publications that we otherwise may not have had the chance to work with such as <em>SmokeLong Quarterly<\/em> and <em>Kikwetu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SLQ: What do you know about flash fiction already? What interests you about flash fiction?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>An author can do so much with such a small amount of writing. The immediacy of the genre and economy of language allows narratives in both fiction and nonfiction to teeter on an urgent, delicate edge.\u00a0It prioritizes quality over quantity to deliver attention grabbing stories. Because it\u2019s short doesn\u2019t mean that the writer should feel as if they don\u2019t have to put as much effort into it. On the contrary, flash fiction requires excellent control over your craft. Compression in flash can move us through hours, days, and entire generations in a single line. This creates an immediate and vast world along with the feeling that it\u2019s been inhabited for a long time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>SLQ: What are you hoping to learn by reading our submission queue?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Kris<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To me, Smokelong consistently publishes fresh and interesting flash pieces, so I am eager to read through the slush to see what people feel motivated to send as well as to be part of some of the behind the scenes conversations and decisions regarding how pieces are selected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Kate<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m hoping to learn how to become more confident in my discernment skills when it comes to deciding between great pieces and pieces that fall flat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Christina<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m hoping to learn to trust my gut within this genre. I&#8217;m used to reviewing poetry and other short prose, but this will be new for me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Charisma<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope to learn how being a reader\/being on the editorial team of a publication works. I am also hoping to learn what is best to include in writing, as I still aspire to write.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Austin<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m curious to learn how writers navigate the storm that is flash! SmokeLong Workshop Celebration  &#8211; August 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Each month we celebrate our current and previous workshop participants\u2019 publications reported to us through Submittable (The SmokeLong Workshop Prize). Each of the publications below, with the exception of those reported by SmokeLong staff members, is eligible to win The SmokeLong Workshop Prize, which is awarded in January of the following year. At the moment, the grand prize is $500. This competition is free to enter and can be found on our Submittable page.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If you have participated in a SmokeLong workshop anytime between 2019 and now and have published something that you drafted in that workshop, your work is eligible. Say you participated in a webinar in 2020 and you published something you started there later in 2023. Let us know now. Your work will be eligible to win the prize in 2025 (awarded in January 2026). Or maybe you published something in 2024 that you started in A SmokeLong Summer 22 but are just now reading about this competition. Let us know now. The only limitations are that your work must be published before the deadline in December each year, and it must have been drafted in a SmokeLong workshop. SmokeLong staff members are not eligible to win The SmokeLong Workshop Prize, but we include their work drafted in a SmokeLong workshop below because we of course want to celebrate their successes too!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In August, our workshop participants reported more than 20 publications to us! This list is always a good place to start if you\u2019re looking for places to publish your own work.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in a SmokeLong workshop (or you have been), and you\u2019re kicking yourself because you didn\u2019t report your success(es) in August, no worries. <br>Martins Deep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interviewed by Helen Rye<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your background and influences as an artist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I had a backdrop, in the sense of a portrait, I\u2019d primarily have Ankara, Hollandis, George, Aso Oke, and lace. I\u2019d also have a tinge of rust, soot, clay, handprints of palm oil, and the final touch of singed edges.<\/p>\n<p>The list of those fabrics used to sew native attires were foremost, because my mother was an active seamstress in the 90s and early 2000s, and watching her make her far-from-basic technical choices on what chalked part to cut for the bodice, bust shaping, or sleeves. Working with those brightly coloured clothing materials required a very demanding conscientious attention to details, especially considering the intricacies of geometric patterns, leaves, vines, feathers, animals, sunbursts, and other abstract motifs. I was insanely drawn to them and soon began trying to replicate them on paper, before my eventual transition to fauna, my family portraits, superhero and cartoon characters.<\/p>\n<p>I had a neighbour, a fellow seamstress to my mother, who was into embroidery like my mum was. There was also an artist down the street who sold artworks in a kiosk by the roadside. I remember watching him from a distance, fascinated by his artistic expression in reimagining the pastoral experience.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, I was surrounded by art, and they spoke to me. From amateur paintings of barbershop hairstyles on walls, covers of classic Nigerian literature, public buses, walls and gates of private schools, and on other random eyesore structures that had no business making me lose sense of time, place and their deplorable conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Among the hundreds of people who have influenced me in different ways, is Njideka Akunyili Crosby. I was drawn to her work for her masterful touch, exploring a number of interconnected themes, such as memory, family and relationships, cultural hybridity, migration, and so forth. I also draw inspiration from the works of Toyin Ojih Odutola, Anthony Azekwoh, and the offerings from a long list of digital artists across social media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you develop your style and processes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Slowly, I\u2019d say, but steadily, and with very limited materials, whether it\u2019s a ballpoint pen, a HB pencil, ledger paper, watercolour, crayons, carton, cardboard, school desk, the flyleaf of my father\u2019s books, or the back of family photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Discouraged by some acquaintances, I took a long break from that interest, and dedicated my artistic pursuit to poetry. In 2019, however, I dabbled into phone photography. It was a seamless transition into digital painting, trying my hands on different styles of painting on Autodesk Sketchbook on my android phone and later Procreate on a tablet, which is where I am currently. The number of times I surprised myself painting digitally really shaped how I approached any of my artistic endeavours.<\/p>\n<p>The process of creation is fairly consuming and would be boring if it weren\u2019t for music that helped lose sense of time. Whatever urgency I had was strictly reserved for the message in the work. It grew rapidly into an obsession. I\u2019d go on to shoot over ten thousand pictures of textures, landscapes, objects, photographs of people I saved for reference, in a way that places them in my humble idea of a more suitable universe that served their quiet ambition.<\/p>\n<p>My first breakthrough came from my amateur discovery of light, dark, color, editing photographs, which showed up in my art as painstaking attention I place on every grain or pixel I can zoom in to for the touch that makes them well connected to a whole. It is never my attempt, however, to be fastidious, or fussy about the tidiness of details. Rather, I focus on the necessary aspects of the work that reflects my life at that point in time. It is a long process of altering existing layers, mistakes that turn out to be just what I needed, experimentation, and aligning myself with the vision of the work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there subjects and themes you return to?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have recurring themes I just can&#8217;t seem to get enough of as I progress. They\u2019re namely; grief, longing, loss, memory, innocence, and the garden variety, which I believe is the ultimate component identifiable in my work. How these thematic concerns come to be, or intersect, is up to the spirit of the moment supervising its creation. All I do is devote my time to work and stay open for astonishment.<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do these preoccupations come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My understanding of migration, lost innocence, trauma, grief, and loss traces back to sectarian violence in 2000. The fallout is still visible: lives lost, families displaced, schooling interrupted, poverty entrenched, and entire communities left underdeveloped. What I had to work with was violence left behind in its wake.<\/p>\n<p>Escaping a mob at six, hoisted by my father to peer over a fence was more than a practical act of checking whether it was safe to cross. At that moment, I, his first son, had imbibed the consciousness of collective eyes and tongue. The encouragement I received from people who engaged those realities in my work are proof of the burden that\u2019s shaped my identity and connection to art in an unusual way. Every project feels like the last chance to leave something behind, hence, urgency, hence, archiving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do these ideas make their way into your writing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Constantly, I\u2019d say, and I\u2019ve never tried to keep them apart. I\u2019d, however, like to think I draw my most profound inspiration from viewing my own paintings or photographs. The output in my poetics are my symbolism, metaphors and imagery. They\u2019re more animated by my reimagination of them in my writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the story behind the Issue 92 cover art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The surrealist image was created in 2022 using Autodesk Sketchbook. It was based on a photograph I took of my friend, Samuel Gaku, during our undergraduate studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. During that time, we had spoken at length about migration. That conversation stayed with me and eventually became the foundational substance from which the image developed.<\/p>\n<p>The ship on the man\u2019s head, in partial replacement of his hat, emerged as a symbolic element tied to those ideas of confronting migration, or embodying the dream of seeking a better life elsewhere. Greener pastures, as my countrymen put it. Embodying ableist expectations is an act of erasure that injures disabled spirits and silences disabled stories. But turning to disabled bodies and minds can be a source of great inspiration and innovation. In this interactive seminar for writers of all genres, we will explore strategies to help writers discover disabled forms and structures for creative work.
