Smoking With Ellen Parker
None of the events I've described in the story happened to me. Darn! But the attitude in the story is all mine. What inspired this fascinating story? Who inspires you to write? A photograph inspired me to write the story. See? At the Zoetrope Virtual Studios, I joined with a group of writers to do a series of exercises to inspire us to write flash fiction. One of the exercises asked us to write a flash about this photo. Interesting photo but the people in it are much too pretty. So I gave them angst. Who inspires me to write? Me. I tell myself, Ellen, get off your lazy ass and write. What is your favorite time to write? Do you have a favorite place to write? My most productive time to write is first thing in the morning, but because of family and work obligations I can't always do that. So I grab the time whenever I can. The only place I write is in my office at home, at my computer. Right now it's freezing in here. Brrr! I need to turn up the heat. What attracted you to write flash fiction? Its brevity. If you couldn't write, what would be your creative outlet? When my daughter was an infant, I was too tired and nervous to write, so when she was sleeping I would paint furniture. I mean, I would take chairs and tables and household objects and paint them all sorts of wild colors and do stencils on them and sometimes mosaics. Nothing in the house was safe from me. As my daughter got older, I became less crazed. I started writing again. If I ever quit writing, people better hide their furniture. Read Metallic. |
